Dear Apple, I'm Sorry!

A few weeks ago you may have read my post on the release of the iPhone5 and how disappointed we here at SOV HQ were. Since then I took my own advice and upgraded to the beautifully engineered GalaxyS3. This phone could only be described as BRILLIANT! Its speed for accessing the web was second to none and the HD screen couldn’t have been any clearer ... HOWEVER, it’s now back in the hands of T-Mobile.

Yes, that’s right all – I couldn’t hack it! Although the GalaxyS3 was perfectly different to the iPhone I have been in possession with for the last 2 years, it is far too big for single hand use with the screen width exceeding the reach of my thumb! That’s right guys, you heard it here first – it was too large to work! Although the screen size was stunning for viewing videos, films, photos etc, the width of the phone itself was far too uncomfortable to hold. Also girls, it wasn’t one that easily fitted into my handbag! Major problem there!

As we know, the design and engineering of mobile phones has gradually got smaller and smaller, so why all of a sudden are phone companies breaking trend and making things bigger again?
Let’s look at this properly, it’s been over 25 years since the first mobile phone hit society and looked like THIS!

Now this particular model, (Motorola 4500). was hardly mobile at all!  Very large, a heavy battery and little more than 20 minutes of talktime before the battery ran out and yours for a small cost of over £1,000! No wonder design for mobiles had to improve.

In 1987 this Nokia beauty was in the hand(S) of the rich weighing around 800g and was more portable than the Motorola 4500.

It was Nokia that first saw the potential for mobile phones as fashion items rather than mere gadgets, recognising that the size and weight had to be more considered.
In 1997 the Nokia 8110i was released, which featured in The Matrix. When the film came out in 1999, Nokia was ready with a new version of the phone, the 7110.

While most mobile phone companies were still offering bulky handsets, Motorola unveiled the ultra-slim RAZR phone in 2004, and it quickly became the must-have gadget of the mid noughties - and in a variety of colours!  I for one was the proud owner of this slick product.

In June 2007 the mobile phone industry was given a harsh wake-up call as Apple launched the iPhone. By the start of 2010 more than 3 billion apps had been downloaded by iPhone users across the world!

With this brief snapshot into the history of how mobile phones have developed in aesthetic, speed and size, it’s no wonder Apple have got it right and are continuing to be the favourite on the market ( iPhone 5 sold 5 million in the first 3 days of release, crazy stuff).

It’s clear that much research went into not increasing screen size massively due to the average size of thumb size, hence why I struggled with the massive 4.8” screen of the Galaxy S3. The iPhone 5 is also lighter and quicker to access apps and online data! I for one am bought straight back in ... . So much so that my very own iPhone5 has been ordered this week.  “Why fix something that’s not broken?”

Again Apple, I’m sorry for not jumping on the bandwagon sooner!

iTypewriter - Apple iPad

Hi everyone,

While doing my usual browsing through the infinitely massive entity that is the World Wide Web, I came across a little product called the iTypewriter.

The iTypewriter is basically just an accessory for the iPad which makes it feel more like an original, old-school typewriter. Your iPad slots into the top and when you punch the keys as you would on an ordinary typewriter, it doesn't put ink to paper but instead it physically presses the keys that are displayed on your iPad. This is a very simple concept for a product but seems to work.

With regards to who would actually buy this product, I am not really sure. When I first saw it I thought it was a ridiculously silly idea. However, having watched the video and seen it in action I have found myself liking the device and it is actually pretty cool how it is just such a simple concept. Saying that, I would never pay money for such a product which doesn't really add any functionality what so ever to an already expensive piece of kit.

Click here for the Youtube video of the iTypewriter in action

I will leave you to make your own decision as to what you think of the iTypewriter, we would love to hear some of your comments.

iPhone 5!

Wednesday 12th September 2012 was a date that was in many of our diaries ... The iPhone 5 launch!

After a blog a few months ago now, I told you I was excitedly holding out for the release of the brand new iPhone 5 however I’m not sure I was justified waiting for what was hyped up as the smart phone event of this year.

Reading several articles and watching the news on Apple’s latest product, I can’t really see that many differences to what Apple have brought to market previously.

Some of the iPhone 5’s new features include the following:

The new screen

Offers a 16:9 ratio, matching that of widescreen televisions, however its 4in (10.2cm) size still remains smaller than rival displays used by Samsung, Nokia, Motorola, LG, HTC and Sony's flagship models.  The problem is that the new iPhone won't really give you much more screen than the old one!

The camera

An eight megapixel model - the same as in the iPhone 4S, and a lower specification than LG and Sony's most recent devices.

The new “Google Maps” ... Flyover

Apple have chosen not to use Google Maps but to create a similar system called Flyover.  This app allows you to find your way from an aerial view however, isn’t this really just what Google did all those years ago and many have already bought into?

Re-skinned ITunes...

WOW! Thanks. Much needed but not that exciting and certainly not worthy of finishing the keynote on.

WORKING Siri

....Or so we are told.  I’m still to be convinced that this functions as Apple says it does however I won’t strike them off just yet until I know for myself.

There appears to be a few more evolutions that many of us don’t appear happy with such as the new adaptors that all users will have to purchase to plug the device into existing speakers and other equipment, just because the 5 has a “brand new” 9 pin adaptor!  There’s an additional £25 we weren’t aware about. The lack of a real styling overhaul now leaves Apple with an aesthetic that hasn't really changed for over 3 years.  Even more concerning for Apple, perhaps we are all starting to become a bit more cynical about their new products. It could be judged that Apple have made a rod for their own backs through the relentless innovation and the expectation that creates. It may be an excellent device, but I think people just expected that one big Wow factor feature that didn't really materialise.

Apple also has become a “copycat” in the now crowded tablet marketplace. Jobs once said the iPad's 9.7in screen was the perfect size, and smaller tablets made no sense. Then the Android camp had success with 7in tablets like Amazon's Kindle Fire and Google's Nexus 7, and now Apple supposedly will announce its own smaller iPad in October. Are Apple losing their leadership in trend setting in the market place?

SoVibrant were particularly excited about the new product but today we’re feeling deflated.  Some good advice for potential 5 buyers ... maybe don’t jump on the bandwagon this time!

iPhone 5

Like many hundreds of thousands in the world, I am desperately awaiting the launch of the new iPhone5 (which will supposedly just be known as “iPhone”).  My iPhone 3GS was due for an upgrade months ago and I have been tempted by an iPhone 4S, but, I am holding out for the must have iPhone 5.

Unfortunately (or fortunately, whichever way you look at it) there isn’t anything definitive that shows us what this new model will look like or when it’ll be coming to our high street stores.  This morning I stumbled across an article (Mail online) which mentioned the release of the “Mini iPad” on 12th September, with the release of the iPhone following on 9 days later.... but still nothing set in stone.

The new iPhone is due for its first radical refresh since it launched in 2007, and it is expected to be bigger than ever - at least in terms of the screen-size.  There are many rumours that suggest what the potential changes to its looks and its enhanced features might be. These are some of the most talked about.

-       A new 4” screen (16:9)

-       A metallic plate that covers the back of the iPhone from antenna break to antenna break, leaving only the top and bottom clear, glass, and presumably radio-friendly.

-       The Home button, Sleep/Wake button, and volume controls all look the same, though the front mounted FaceTime camera has presumably  been centred.

Take a look at the images below and see what you think.  If the new model is anything like the above description and images, I’ll be glad I’ve waitied!

RIP Steve Jobs

Today the world has woken to the sad news that the leader and face of Apple, Steve Jobs has passed away at the age of 56.

In 2004 Steve was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer and in August this year stepped down from his 14 year chief executive position. He sadly passed away only 1 day after the launch of Apple’s latest product, the Iphone 4S.

Steve Jobs was a global inspiration, showing that anyone with a dream can potentially change the world.  He was seen as the heart and soul of the firm which was briefly more valuable than the whole of the USA earlier this year.

Many well known faces have spoken out this morning about the tragic loss of such an inspiration and modern day genius.   Eric Schmidt of Google said "He uniquely combined an artist's touch and an engineer's vision to build an extraordinary company... One of the greatest American leaders in history."  Mark Zuckerberg has also posted on Facebook this morning “Steve, thank you for being a mentor and a friend. Thanks for showing that what you build can change the world. I will miss you”. (243,188 likes at 08:56 GMT).

The news has touched millions of people around the globe and from SoVibrant we’d like to say thank you to Steve. He was a true pioneer, a champion of innovation and challenged convention throughout his illustrious career. The list of devices and developments in technology that he was responsible for is truly awesome. He inspired so many people and touched so many lives, the world owes Steve Jobs a debt of gratitude.

RIP Steve Jobs. Thanks for everything.
