Times Square Time Lapse!

Hi All,

Happy New Year! ... Or is it too late for that now?

Whether it is or it isn’t I thought I would share with you a pretty cool time lapse from New Year in Times Square.  Now, I was over there myself at the time this was taken but I certainly didn’t see the New Year in like this or as creatively (head hangs in shame).
   
This time lapse video was created by Noel Cordero. Brandon Cotter & Hector Arrivillaga of the Timelapse Group and definitely captures what Times Square has to offer on New Year … without the close up footage of the freezing cold crowd and crazy hat and glasses wearing antics!  This video focuses more on how the space changes over the course of 12 hours from various locations nearby.  The video incorporates 18,000 stills and focuses predominantly from a plan view.  Take a look at this yourself and see what you think!  Blink and you’ll miss the ball drop 141feet!!

1 World Trade Center V The Empire State

Following on from previous blogs about my trip to New York and the World Trade Center site, it was good to hear that One World Trade Center has become New York's tallest building.

The installation of a column on the 100th floor of the once named Freedom Tower, makes the structure 1,271ft (387m) high, overtaking the Empire State.

This date comes a day before the one-year anniversary of the operation that killed Osama Bin Laden.

Another reminder of the building's significance to all New Yorkers, along with the other symbolic architectural references of the building’s final height and the square water features below. A memorial to all the people that died, in the same location as the original 2 buildings.

The finished building will be 1,776ft high making it temporarily the second tallest building in the world, after the Burj Khalifa in Dubai at 2,723ft (830m)

As mentioned before the building doesn't win any awards for me on an architectural footing, as the design has been compromised for security and simplicity.

Some of the other buildings proposed for the site have tried harder to progress the skyscraper as a building type with ideas and forms that will be new to the city.

One World Trade Center is basically a chamfered block, however it does win on height and symbolic references, which it has the original concept work by Daniel Libeskind to thank.

RIP Steve Jobs

Today the world has woken to the sad news that the leader and face of Apple, Steve Jobs has passed away at the age of 56.

In 2004 Steve was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer and in August this year stepped down from his 14 year chief executive position. He sadly passed away only 1 day after the launch of Apple’s latest product, the Iphone 4S.

Steve Jobs was a global inspiration, showing that anyone with a dream can potentially change the world.  He was seen as the heart and soul of the firm which was briefly more valuable than the whole of the USA earlier this year. 

Many well known faces have spoken out this morning about the tragic loss of such an inspiration and modern day genius.   Eric Schmidt of Google said "He uniquely combined an artist's touch and an engineer's vision to build an extraordinary company... One of the greatest American leaders in history."  Mark Zuckerberg has also posted on Facebook this morning “Steve, thank you for being a mentor and a friend. Thanks for showing that what you build can change the world. I will miss you”. (243,188 likes at 08:56 GMT). 

The news has touched millions of people around the globe and from SoVibrant we’d like to say thank you to Steve. He was a true pioneer, a champion of innovation and challenged convention throughout his illustrious career. The list of devices and developments in technology that he was responsible for is truly awesome. He inspired so many people and touched so many lives, the world owes Steve Jobs a debt of gratitude.

RIP Steve Jobs. Thanks for everything.
