Climate Control

Since winning the World Cup bid in December, football fans have questioned whether a summer World Cup in Qatar would be fair on players or spectators.
Temperatures in June and July can reach up to 50C, however FIFA president Sepp Blatter has stated that the tournament will not move from its traditional dates in the summer.

To help fight against these unbearable temperatures Qatar plan to air condition their World Cup stadia via solar power.
Recently the latest development in Qatar's bid to control the climate is an artificial cloud.

Qatar scientists have designed the 'clouds', which can be produced at a cost of $500,000 (about £310,000) each.
The 'clouds' are made from a lightweight carbon structure, and carry a giant envelope of material containing helium gas.
Four solar-powered engines move the structure via remote control.

Looking at the shaded stadium designs featured below, this may work overhead , and help Jack Wilshire from getting cramp.

Man's wife says "NO" to IPad 2, Apple says "YES!"

This is a great little story that hit the news today about a man returning an iPad 2.

Apple keeps track of why people return iPads, sticking post it notes on the returned iPad with the reason.

A source close to Apple says an iPad 2 came back with a post it note that said, "Wife said no." This amused Apple employees.

Eventually, two Apple VPs heard about it, and decided to send the iPad back to the man with a post it note that read, "Apple said yes."

Absolutely brilliant!

New Design Classic

Following our series of blogs on Design Classics, I thought it would be nice to mention a potential new Design Classic.
It takes a few decades to achieve this status, however the winner of this year’s Brit Insurance Design Awards could be a future candidate.
Making the ten o'clock news last night is a good start.

The stylish energy saving light bulb, the Plumen 001 was crowned the overall winner of the Design Awards after topping the product category.
Judges said the design by Hulger and Samuel Wilkinson brought "a small measure of delight to an everyday product."

As well as looking good, the Plumen is said to use 80% less energy and to last eight times longer than a traditional incandescent bulb.

The NEW eco friendly city!

After watching The Human Planet this week I found myself being completely taken back by Norman Fosters new venture.

Norman Foster and Partners are creating the world’s first zero-carbon and zero-waste city in Abu Dhabi. The new 6 million square metre sustainable development Masdar was driven by the Abu Dhabi Future Energy Company.  The city will contain their new headquarters along with a new university devoted to new ideas for energy production.

To remain zero-carbon, the city will be entirely car free. Carefully planned public transportation will ensure that none of the city’s inhabitants will have to walk more than 200 metres before meeting some part of the transportation link.

We’ve all seen sustainable structures from Foster before, but this takes Foster’s green initiatives to a whole new level!

To find out more about Masdar, check out this brilliant link
