My kind of shoe shop...

Whilst researching for a new project in the “circus field” I came across this amazing design by Rosenbaum. It was inspired by the circus and is complete with displays hanging from the ceiling that represents trapezes, and the Melissa Collection are the modern trapeze artists.

The colorful, futuristic and sculptural qualities of the Melissa Collection are able to dazzle against the uncomplicated interior. The interior stays very minimal using a combination of white, grey, and silver, except for the logo MELISSA ET CIRCUS, which is made of acrylic and purple lines in the neon colors of the campaign. The trapeze swing, twist, and twirl at different levels as the guests immerse themselves in the performance of the collection therefore becoming part of the design experience not just an onlooker.

Design Classic No. 111: The PH Artichoke pendant lightfitting

The Artichoke Pendant was designed by Poul Henningsen in 1958 and is manufactured by Louis Poulsen. The design resembles an artichoke with 72 'leaves' centred around, but obscuring, the light source. The light is directed and reflected upon leaves until it illuminates the entire artichoke. The leaves can be manufactured in copper, white painted or brushed stainless steel and the fitting comes in three different sizes. Beautiful but pricey (£5800)!

Amazing 3D render

Hi everyone,

I just wanted to post this render I came across while browsing the usual geeky 3D galleries online. The image completely stands out as head and shoulders above others that I have seen recently. It is by Cat-a-pult studios (http://www.cat-a-pult.com.ua/) and was created using 3DS Max, Vray and Photoshop.

At first glance this 3D render could very easily be mistaken for an actual photograph. When you look closely, you can see that the photorealism is largely down to the huge attention to detail that the artist has. Also the lighting used in this render manages to create a mood which really pulls you into the image.

As always, any C&C's are welcome and any ideas on how the render might have been created.

Power for the ladies

The SongMax clothing store in Bejing, China has finally been completed. The designers wanted this division of space to suggest a walk-in cupboard, catwalk and stage. This project is a show room and prototype store for a new women’s clothing brand.

The floor inside was lifted to represent a stage. The “L-Container” introduces a contoured alleyway to resemble the sensation of a private walk-in-closet at home, which is a real stage! A convertible dressing room at the end is to place real women at the centre of the deepened “display window” which projects directly towards the entryway and traverses through the whole store.

The design goal was to respond to the client’s desire to serve the stylish, confident and still feminine career women and with the angular powerful shapes and feminine “walk in closest and catwalk” features, I think this project has been highly successful – just a shame about the lack of clothes!

Design classic No. 74: The Telephone Box

Ah, back in the days when telephones had a wire coming out of the talking-end attaching them to a box with a circular dial, British Telecom (then known as 'The General Post Office') commissioned a competition in 1924 to design a public cubical to replace their concrete 'K1' kiosk.

The winning 'K2' design by Giles Gilbert Scott satisfied the GPO and the Royal Fine Arts Commission as to its suitability and was produced in red painted cast iron and glass. This design was subsequently superseded by designs K3-K8.

Many have now been removed, converted into useful street-urinals or kiosks in which one can browse the local massage services on offer.

Atomic Spa

This is an interactive and unusual spa where its interior features are like nothing else.

The space is made up of a reception area, many dreamlike passages, men and women’s changing rooms, treatment cabins, sauna, Turkish bath, showers, ice maker, relax area and a large swimming pool sporting multiple water effects and hydro massage jets. All the mentioned features aim at accompanying the visitor on a dreamlike adventure by lulling and involving them throughout the whole experience. This space has its own personal identity independently of the hotel it is linked to. The reception desk which is perfectly white and shiny gives a warm welcome with the multicolour backlighting and as the visitor approaches a dreamlike “Alice in Wonderland” adventure, they then progress into the main spa experience – a “new world” zone. This amazing (yet confusing and disorientating) trip incorporates luminous floating windows, bright bands of colour and hidden subliminal messages whilst also keeping with some conventional ideas of spas such as vast calm spaces and luxurious pools.

This spa is a bespoke and unique adventure into (and for) body revitalisation and wellbeing with a slightly unconventional twist!

“A work capable of touching emotions and involving people, of overwhelming consciousness, of stimulating mind and body perceptions, that is how the idea of Milan Exedra came along. The architectural interior Aria I composed for Angelo and his enlightened family aims at bringing the visitor in an almost subliminal way to another dimension which is surreal, metaphysical, unlikely and capable of converting experience into active memory. All the ingredients contained in this signs ensemble such as light, materials and colours make it a destabilising symbol which underlines the new relationship among man and space, man and time, and man and present-future.” – Simone Micheli

Design Classic No. 38: The AEC Routemaster

Introduced by London Transport in 1956, the AEC Routemaster double decker bus remained in service until 2005. The front-engined, rear open platform buses could seat 64 plus several downstairs standing positions.

Although the rear platform was open to the elements, this feature combined with the presence of a conductor enabled speedy passenger turn-around at bus stops. It also allowed the very late (and very brave) to chase the Routemaster through busy London junctions, timing one's run with perfection to make a desperate lunge and grab the vertical handrail, hanging on for dear life whilst the stoney-faced seated passengers do their best to ignore your peril and your brand new brogues are shredded as you round Hyde Park Corner at 30mph…..

Along with Beefeaters, phone boxes and crap steakhouses, the Routemaster is a must for all tourists visiting London (in Englandshire).

Artist of the week #29 Daniel Cheng

At Sovibrant we have many weird and wonderful passions which help to drive us in developing our incredible projects.

We also have another passion......  CALL OF DUTY.

Now with the release of the new Call of Duty Black Ops (CoD) game, we thought our artist of the week would have to be the Call of Duty lead concept artist Daniel Cheng. Working out of California, Daniel has worked on games ranging from those as simple as Boom Blox to the amazingly successful Medal of Honour and Golden eye series'. We can't wait to see what he has to offer in this latest instalment to the CoD collection.
To view more of Daniel's work visit his site at : http://www.danielcheng.com/
