Tate Modern extension news

The Tate Modern has announced that the development of the former power station's oil tanks will indeed be ready for next summer's Cultural Olympiad, set to correspond with the 2012 Olympic Games.

The 30m diameter, 7m high, subterranean concrete chambers, unused for 30 years, are set to provide "exciting new spaces for art in the world".

The second phase of the extension project, delayed until 2016 due to lack of funding, will include a new building designed by the Swiss firm Herzog & de Meuron, providing a further 11 storeys of gallery space.

The Tate Modern is second most-visited arts institution in the world, behind the Louvre.
