Design Classic No.243: The Anglepoise Lamp

Designed in 1933 by George Carwardine, the beauty of the Anglepoise lamp is its ability to remain in a stationary position having being manoeuvred in to every conceivable position.

Opposing springs set above the heavy-duty base ensure the joint remains in constant tension, rather like the human arm. Carwardine was an automotive engineer specialising in suspension springs but originally intended the principal to be used in chair design. The efficiency benefits of having a focused beam of light enable the lamp to carry a lower wattage bulb than normally required. The Anglepoise has been refined over the years but remains a best seller, including the giant 2.7m-reach version (!)
