Every year thousands of people make the journey to the Black Rock Desert in Nevada for one week to form an experimental artistic community known as Burning Man. The gathering takes its name from the burning of a large wooden effigy at the climax of the event. This year 48,000 people formed a temporary city known as Black Rock City.
The Burning Man Festival is governed by ten principals; radical inclusion, gifting, decommodification, radical self reliance, radical self expression, community effort, civic responsibility, 'leave no trace', participation and immediacy. I believe that this gives a fleeting glimpse of how a society can be successfully structured (even temporarily) without the need for money or the burden of debt.
The result is an amazing collection of temporary art installations, sculpture, and alternative culture. The images below give a flavour of this years event. Check out some more pictures from Scott London here.
