SoVibrant at Yorkshire INSIDER Property Industry Awards

At SoVibrant we don’t often blog about our own projects, awards or whereabouts so to break the current trend in my colleagues blogging, I thought I would share an event myself and Mike attended earlier this month.

Every Year INSIDER hold a Property Industry Awards Ceremony in New Dock Hall, Leeds.  This year SoVibrant were a main sponsor of the event and we can safely say the exposure we have had through the event has been very positive.

The night started with a drinks reception, meeting our guests and catching up with others in the industry.  This is always a nice start to the evening and even better, a nice wind down to the busy day at SOV HQ.  We were greeted to the event by key speakers from INSIDER and also had the fantastic Scottish comedian Fred Macaulay as the comperé.  Unfortunately (or fortunately as some may say) our table was in the comperés line of fire so we ended up being part of the comedy quite a few times throughout the night ... amazing free advertising!

We settled into the evening with a beautiful three course meal followed on with the awards ceremony....What we had been waiting for.  We were so proud to see two of our clients, City of York Council (West Offices) and Yorkshire Building Society (Broadgate) not only be nominated but actually receive awards.  Tracy Carter from City of York Council accepted the award for Restoration and Refurbishment of the Year with West Offices and Philip Kirtlan accepted the award for Commercial Property Deal of the Year.  As a main sponsor we were also able to hand out an award for Consultancy of the Year in which Davis Langdon were the winners.  I can only describe the on stage situation as slightly daunting, but also felt a great sense of achievement in not tripping up the stage and not drinking too much vino so could pronounce the winners clearly! PHEW!

The awards continued through to the early morning however not before I personally got heckled by the comperé.  At the time this was again, a daunting situation in front of 400 industry professionals including being dragged on stage for a photo with Fred Macaulay himself! Ahh never mind, it was all fun and games and SoVibrant have most definitely made an impact in the industry in 2013.

Be sure to follow us on Twitter at SoVibrantUK for our latest news and whereabouts.

Finally ... no more pressure!

A few drinks later ... the party continues.

The Book Country

New landmark buildings outside London have been a bit thin on the ground in recent years, so to hear about the new 10 storey Library of Birmingham opening its doors yesterday is all good news for the construction industry. It may have been publically funded at a cost of £188.8m, but this building could be the start of several new landmark developments popping up around Birmingham.

In Leeds we've seen the opening of Trinity Shopping Centre and Leeds Arena this summer, so let hope this is all a good sign that the construction industry is well clear of recession.

Birmingham’s colourful new BREEAM excellent library, designed by Mecanoo with Buro Happold, is 20% larger than its predecessor and will display 400,000 of the institution’s 1 million text collection to the public. The outside of the building has gained a lot of attention over the past few months as construction has drawn to an end. With its intricate interlocking metal circles, reminiscent of a Spirograph pattern and references the ‘interlocking stories of industrial heritage, jewellery, people and knowledge’ in the local area.

A design similar to one we have used recently in a linear format, which can also graphically reference a DNA strand. Very fitting for a large scale library full of knowledge and research about all known living organisms and the origins of life.

I'm always up for a hint of Pantone!

Good evening all,

I was recently looking for a short break away and happened to stumble accross an extremely unique hotel which made my decision for both location and accommodation ... The Pantone Hotel, Brussels (Designed by Belgian interior designer Michel Penneman and Belgian architect Olivier Hannaert, complete May 2010).

So let’s start with a little bit of history.  Pantone is known worldwide for the colour matching system invented by its founder Lawrence Herbert in 1963. Having expanded the system from its roots in graphic design to other “colour critical” industries including digital technology, fashion, home, plastics, architecture and contract interiors, more recently the brand has extended into a Pantone ‘universe’ of products incorporating everything from mugs to stationery.  Such items aren’t seen at SOV HQ yet but maybe after my October visit I could start the trend!

Like most, but in particular being a designer, we all like to stay in “good looking” accommodation particularly on our holiday.  The main reception invites guests with eye catching rotating wall imagery, multi coloured bike displays (of course, what else in a hotel reception) and an eclectic mix of low level waiting room furniture.  Not something I would usually specify but in this space, it looks right at home.

This 59 bedroomed hotel offers unique design and brand experience to each floor with a specific Pantone colour allocated to each room.  Within each of the rooms there is the story displayed of the photography and photographer (Victor Levy) for the imagery used.  Pantone colour value canvas’ can also be found along with reiterative Pantone elements such as hanging mugs and Pantone inspired lamps!  Each of the hotel’s seven floors are enlightened by different colour palettes to complement guests’ emotions with distinctive hues.  Pretty quirky eh?  The hotel aims to educate its guest on how colour can be used to express certain feeling and emotions and I for one can’t wait to see their rationale and understanding into how the designers came to their conclusions.

I’ll let you know what it’s like in a few months time but for now, explore for yourself at http://www.pantonehotel.com/ or http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BdwpvzsqPcA http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3LalUAxm_jA
