Boutique your Hotel!

After attending a fantastic seminar last Friday with Scarletopus at our lovely friend’s Steelcase Solutions’ Leeds offices, I thought I would share with you one of the incredible projects that was showcased.

The below images show an artwork, or should I say graffiti, installation ..... Panic Room by Tilt.  The French graffiti artist, Tilt has taken over one half of a Marseille hotel room (Au vieux panier) in graffiti decoration, whilst the other half remains complete blank!  A clear line divides the room with every surface on the grafitti side completely covered in tags, drips and "throw ups", including excessive detailing over wall mirrors and dressing tables.

The room took a whole week to complete and I definitely think it achieves what the artist wanted .... for people to appreciate any type of graffiti.  I have to say though, I can’t really imagine staying in such chaos!  What do you think?

Rubik Cube Art

Hungarian sculptor and professor of architecture, Erno Rubik, invented his cube in 1974 and it went on to become the world's best selling toy shifting over 3.5m units.

For those of us who would rather smash the damn thing in to its individual pieces, here's an alternative use: Art.

Graphene - Future applications

Hi everyone,

Graphene is quickly becoming the leading scientific research area of our time. Graphene is basically a two dimensional material with amazing properties which, once harnessed, could drastically change the way we live our lives.

There is a wealth of information online about Graphene, but basically it consists of single-atom-thick layers of carbon. These layers are so thin that they only exist in 2 dimensions so don't have any depth. Due to this and their extremely tight honey-combed structure, they contain some very unusual properties. These consist of the potential to be the strongest material known to man being over 200 times stronger than steel, as well as the lightest. Graphene also has an incredible abilility to conduct heat and power (electrons) which opens up a new world of electronic advancements.

Imagine the age-old sci-fi concept of an elevator to space, theoretically it could be possible if created with Graphene-based materials. Also, amazing new batteries that are many times more efficient than we currently have, as well as computing power that is hundreds of times faster due to Graphene's unique thermal properties.

What is the best property of Graphene!?  It was discovered right here in the UK, Manchester to be exact and this is where the world's leading Graphene research is being carried out. GET IN!

The two videos below explain what Graphene is and how it is created as well as some of the future applications of Graphene.

Stay tuned for further posts relating to the advancements and new discoveries around Graphene!

Samy Deluxe

Good afternoon readers

Today we bring you an incredible piece of artwork by German rapper Samy Deluxe.
This is his first single "Peosiealbum" from the album "SchwarzWeiss" and to be honest we don't have a clue what he's singing about, but that aside the song is still quite good.

The main reason for posting this video is the motion graphics used. Now this style has been done quite a lot in the past but this is definitely the best we have seen.

Enjoy

Mercury Tower v Federation Tower

With the internal fitout of The Shard still underway I was surprised to read that our new iconic building has already been knocked into second place as Europe’s tallest building. Mercury City Tower in Moscow topped out this week at 339 metres tall, overtaking The Shard by 29 metres.

I previously thought the French would be the first to surpass Renzo Piano’s elegant structure with the Tour Hermitage at La Defense, however it appears Moscow is one place where the global recession has had little impact. Mercury Tower is one of five Russian skyscrapers in the list of ten tallest buildings in Europe, and Moscow is also the city with the most high-rise buildings on the continent. With all this investment in the area its reign as tallest building however will be short-lived, as under construction nearby is the planned 506-metre Federation Tower, which is set to complete next year.

Experts say the two reasons for the property boom in Moscow are the many Russian and foreign investors who focus on prestigious building projects, and the fact that there are less building regulations in Moscow than in any other European city. This may help with the size and speed at which these buildings are going up, however it doesn’t seem to be helping with the final design. I would rather have a shorter Shard in London than a taller Mercury in Moscow !
