Cinemagraphs

New York photographers Jamie Beck and Kevin Burg have developed a new style of photography using animated GIFs. Not quite photograph and not quite film the technique manages to blur the two forms into a completely unique and often mesmerising result.
Jamie muses "There's something magical about a still photograph, a captured moment in time—that can simultaneously exist outside the fraction of a second the shutter captures.”

The Future Of Glass

Materials manufacturer Corning has put together a prediction of the not too distant future of technology in ‘A Day Made of Glass’. The video contains some fantastic concepts for interactive retail, marketing and presentation techniques and develops some of the ideas first seen in the movie Minority Report.

The theme of the video is that we are about to be immersed in an environment of touch screen glass making almost every surface that we encounter throughout our average day completely interactive.
What I find so exciting is that this technology is either readily available now or is just around the corner. The future looks very appealing!

Very Excited About: Google +

After seriously dropping the ball on Wave and Buzz, Google finally seem to have come up with the semblance of some really strong, quality ideas for an opponent to the social media mainstay - Facebook.

Google + contains some really neat ideas which we are pretty excited about testing out. Lets be honest Google needs them if they are to steal any of facebook's enormous  market share. Having given this some thought we have come to the conclusion that yes, unarguably facebook does have a huge market share, but actually people have shown through their migrations to firstly MySpace and then Facebook that if the alternative is strong and offers more scope to personalise, create and share, people aren't afraid to exercise their ability to relocate.

Some of the innovation within + on face value looks very interesting.

Huddle - multi-person IM conversations in private groups. Need to pick a movie to watch tonight with your mates, you can all have a quick chat about it, fall out, then meet up.

Circles - friend groups - so you can keep posts relevant, target what you share to people who will care and keep conversations and pictures limited to those in the know (your boss wont be able to see your glastonbury photos etc)

Hangouts - group video chat where you can all watch streamed content and chat via video messaging. Set up your hangout and wait for your mates.

In conclusion, we are really looking forward to seeing whether this is another great pretender or a serious challenger to Mark Zuckerberg and co.

By the way Google, we do branding... ; )

New York's High Line

When we think of New York we think of The Statue of Liberty, The Empire State building and Central Park but why don’t we know much, if anything about the High Line Park?

The High Line used to be an elevated freight railroad spur called the West Side Line. The line was designed (and used) to lift dangerous freight trains off the streets and last saw a train in 1980. After almost 3 decades laying dormant, a group of New Yorkers put forward an idea for a modern public park.

The first phase of the park was completed in 2009, more recently the second phase has reached completion. The new stretch doubles the length of the park and now reaches 1 mile long finding its way from Gansevoort Street to West 30th Street. Highlights include the Wildflower Field between West 26th and West 29th Streets, and the 'Falcone Flyover' between West 25th and West 26th Streets, where a walkway rises eight feet above the line, allowing visitors to walk through a canopy of sumac and magnolia trees and see the city beyond.

Artist of the week: JP Rasanen

Hi guys,

JP Rasanen is a digital artist we came across not too long ago. His (or her) work ranges from fully detailed finished concept art to quick speed paintings that portray and incredible atmosphere and mood. We would love to tell you more about this artist but unfortunately we have not managed to find any further information at all. Even JP's own website is limited on information but hopefully at some point in the future they will choose to share more information with the world. For now, we will have to let the work speak for its self.

Enjoy.

Insanely realistic vector!!

Check out this insanely photo realistic vector using Illustrator. It is amazing to see how close these  artists get to photography and the beauty of this is it can be scaled up to any size without pixelation.

They use meshes consisting of points, lines, curves and polygons all based on mathematical equations. This must be very meticulous work to achieve such photo-realistic results. We have great admiration for their patience and hard work. Very impressive.

Thundercats re-make 2011!!

Hi everyone,

Being a massive fan of 80's cartoon shows I just wanted to see what everyone thinks of Cartoon Network remaking the classic show Thundercats.

I just wanted to get some opinions and see what everyone thinks. I have included a link to the trailer below and I am probably not alone in saying that is has VERY big boots to fill! Thundercats is one of the most amazing TV series of all time and taking a modern twist on such an iconic show could be a very risky move by Cartoon Network.

I think I will definitely reserve my opinions until I have actually seen a few episodes. Saying that, I am very much looking forward to seeing what they have done with it and how well they have managed to retain what made the Thundercats such an amazing series in the first place.

Santiago Parramón's proposal for the Kaohsiung Port Cruise Terminal of Taiwan has been selected as one of the best 10 projects in the “World Architecture Awards, 20+10+X, 9ª edition”.

The architecture is intended to provide  topography in the area of the city of Kaohsiung in Taiwan,.The concept was intended to contrast and enhance the landscape, rather than to appear a subtle amalgamation of built and natural environment.

We also REALLY love the visuals. Moody, atmospheric,  abstracted and just dripping in sexiness.

Sometimes work just stands out from the crowd. This is one of those times.

Apples, UFO's and Steve Jobs...

Always one for the understated gesture, Steve Jobs has recently given a speech to the Cupertino City Council to get approval for a new UFO, sorry Apple campus in Cupertino, US.

The design is summed up by Jobs quote - "It looks like "a spaceship just landed there," Jobs said.

The project is extremey ambitious - 12000 people housed in a 4 storey glass UFO with not a single piece of straight glass in the facade.
.
It was very interesting to see Jobs in "pitch mode" outside of the more familiar keynote speeches he is renowned for. Suddenly Jobs is more controlled and more low-key.  Like all of us involved with Planning departments, Jobs knows  he does not have the control anymore. His project can easily be thrown out if he pushes too hard.  It is still very obviously a sales pitch but without the flowery use of words like  "magical" or "insanely great."

In the pitch Jobs really shows other facets to his character.. When a council member asks if Apple plans to give the city free wi-fi, he says: "We're the largest taxpayers in Cupertino, so we'd like to continue to stay here and pay taxes,"  A beautiful retort to those who for a small moment held an apple in the palm of their hands.

Key highlights of the project include
  • The campus would use its own natural gas generator as its primary source of power and the city's power grid only as a backup.
  • The building includes an auditorium for conferences, and Jobs suggests that's where Apple could hold its big events instead of renting out space in San Francisco. Certainly the cheapest way to reduce hiring a hall for a night ; )
  • Apple wants to break ground next year, and move in in 2015

If ever a project needed to be saved from value engineering, it is this one. A 4 storey glass box really wont be that special.

Sorry for the terrible low res images, but these are all thats out there at present.

Google Doodle interactive guitar home page!

Hi Guys,

How good is Google’s doodle home page today? They have provided us with a playable and also recordable guitar to honour the pioneer of the electric guitar Les Paul for what would be his 96th birthday. Nice work!

Using a combination of JavaScript, HMTL5, CSS and Flash they have created a highly interactive home page, so whilst searching the web today you can also unleash the musician inside you. Hover over the strings with your mouse and you can strum away. You can also play notes on your keyboard, compose your own 30 second tribute and send it to others, so they can listen to your masterpiece.

Well done to Google for letting Les Paul’s creative spirit spread throughout the world today. Definitely up there for best Google doodle ever. Check it out, we only have this bad boy for 24 hours.

Zaha Hadid - Performing Arts Centre - UAE - We love this!

Part of a competition  to design a new performing arts centre in the UAE. We are big fans of this concept proposal from Zaha Hadid. In Hadid’s Performing Arts Centre concept, a 62 metre high building is proposed housing five theatres – a music hall, concert hall, opera house, drama theatre and a flexible theatre with a combined seating capacity for 6,300 – that’s 1,100 more than London’s Royal Albert Hall. The Centre may also house an Academy of Performing Arts. Love or hate Zaha Hadid's style, it is getting very refined and although there are similarities to other proposals, this scheme is undoubtedly breathtaking. We particularly like the auditorium space shown at the bottom of the page.
