Parrot Dog

In keeping with the previous Blog (artist of the week), SoVibrant would like to post another inspiring creature creation we have come across..... PARROT DOG!

Artist of the Week #28 Michael Kutsche

Michael Kutsche isn't an artist that people are likely to have heard of, but most children around the world would recognise his work. As the lead character artist on the remake of Disney's Alice in Wonderland, Kutsche had the task of recreating the weird and wonderful creatures that inhabit wonderland, without scaring the living daylights out of his audience.
Kutsche mixes his Zbrush skills with Photoshop post production to create these incredible concept character's.

Design Classic No.122: The Sony Walkman

The first Sony Walkman (the TPS-L2) went on sale in July 1979. Originally developed for Akio Morita, one of Sony’s co-chairmen, so that he could listen to opera whilst travelling on business, the Walkman went on to set the trend amongst teens, marketed alongside images associated with sport and leisure.

The designs soon advanced to include radios, graphic equalisers and the distinctive yellow waterproof version. Soon however the cassette was superseded and the device evolved in to the CD walkman (Discman), the Mini Disc Walkman and the Video walkman. Eventually the Apple iPod has dominated the personal stereo market and Sony has this week announced the end of production of the classic cassette Walkman. Happy memories.

SoVibrant Wins City Of York Council Contract

SoVibrant are thrilled to announce their appointment as Workplace Consultants on the West Offices scheme for City of York Council. Appointed by York Investors LLP, SoVibrant will be working closely with the Developers team, Architects Crease Strikland Parkins and the Councils project team to ensure all of the Councils operational requirements are catered for within the internal planning of the new Headquarters.

The Council is undertaking a major project to rationalise its current office accommodation from sixteen buildings to four, including the provision of a new customer centre. The purpose-built York Customer Centre is the single most important focal point for the new headquarters building. The new customer facility will allow quick, simple and easy access to services in one place in a modern customer environment that supports the overall customer access strategy.

SoVibrant will be undertaking face to face consultation with staff and directorates to gain a detailed understanding of the future business requirements. SoVibrant will also be assisting with initiatives around flexible working, the reduction of paper filing and implementation of new working practices to help the Council make the transition as easy as possible.

Having worked with the Council in 2009 on their pilot ‘Office of The Future’ scheme, SoVibrant will also be working alongside the architectural team to develop an overall interior concept, creating an inspirational environment for the staff and visitors who interact with the building.

Design Classic No. 166: The Supermarine Spitfire 1936

First revealed to the British public in June 1936, the Supermarine Spitfire has subsequently become a classic icon of World War II. Powered by another design classic, the Rolls Royce V12 Merlin engine, the Spitfire was capable of 348mph.

It is the distinctive, elliptical wing shape that gives the spitfire it's iconic silhouette. The shape evolved in order to minimise drag yet have enough strength to enable four .303 inch Browning machine guns to be mounted per wing. Designer Reginald Mitchell also thought the shape ‘looked nice’!

Interior Details

Here at Sovibrant we like to see interior projects with some tricky detailing that create the wow factor.

This project in San Francisco, USA for Caesar Stone's Showroom has a dividing wall that does just that.

The feature wall delineates between the two major spaces of public showroom and private office.
It is a very strong aspect of the design; measuring roughly 120' long and 15' tall.

The concept evolved from the methods in which stone is cut at the quarry, recognizing the sharp serrated edges.

These edges resemble a mountain range or vertical stone cliffs that reminds us where these beautiful stone tiles originated from.

The detail below illustrates the 37 custom-cut fins to replicate the peaks and serrated edges of the stone using a CNC router.
Simple materials with maximum impact.

Design Classic No.243: The Anglepoise Lamp

Designed in 1933 by George Carwardine, the beauty of the Anglepoise lamp is its ability to remain in a stationary position having being manoeuvred in to every conceivable position.

Opposing springs set above the heavy-duty base ensure the joint remains in constant tension, rather like the human arm. Carwardine was an automotive engineer specialising in suspension springs but originally intended the principal to be used in chair design. The efficiency benefits of having a focused beam of light enable the lamp to carry a lower wattage bulb than normally required. The Anglepoise has been refined over the years but remains a best seller, including the giant 2.7m-reach version (!)
