3D Artist Highlight

Hi everyone,

I Just wanted to make a post to recognise a 3D artist that, to me, really manages to capture light and shadow perfectly.

Girish D Joshi is a 3D artist living in Airoli, New Bombay and very much has spiked my interest with his recent set of renders (courtesy of his post on CGarchitect).  The renders are attached below and are very good examples of how good lighting can perfectly lift and capture the mood of an image. Girish has taken a very simple and minimal subject matter and made a subtle, yet very big impact.

As always, C's & C's welcome.

All images are copyright Girish D Joshi and he can be contacted through CGarchitect.

Armani on 5th!

When thinking of any Armani product it is inevitable that the vast majority would think of an extravagant and luxury surrounding to accommodate the brand, and the 5th Avenue New York store certainly does that!

5th is home to Armani’s flagship store with the grand staircase as the exciting focal point, a sculptural feature unique in design which connects all the different levels that accommodate the “Armani universe”. Innovative in both layout and content, Armani is the first concept store in which all the Armani products are presented in a single space.

Every element of the interior design, from the exhibitors to the rooms to display clothes and the desks to the armchairs, follows the movement concept generated by the staircase, becoming part of the same whirlwind experience and working successfully with the natural buzz of NYC!

Proof that Architects aren't always right.

This is the first of a series of blogs highlighting some of the recently constructed pieces of Architecture that have caught our eye for the wrong reasons.
Intended in good spirits, we thought it would be only polite to share some of these buildings found in the Architectural  “what were you thinking?” folder.
Enjoy!

Artist of the Week #23. Glenn Anderson

Glenn Anderson is an established multidisciplinary artist and illustrator. His work spans large-scale murals and spaces through to illustrations, character design and commissions for a range of large to small clients including Roxy, L'Oreal and Channel 4. Some real similarities with another favourite at SoVibrant, Lucy McLauchlan, we really like the mix of illustrative, grafitti and painting styles that run through Glenn's portfolio.

Visit Glenns website at http://www.g-anders.co.uk/ to find out more.

Dutch Courage

It has come to the attention of SoVibrant that an amazing feat is taking place next year in aid of Medecins Sans Frontieres (Doctors Without Borders) and we are pledging our support.

Andy Dennis is aiming to raise £16,800 (or multiples thereof) for MSF in 2011. This figure represents the £1400 per month to put TWO volunteers in the field for one year. In order to achieve he is walking from Amsterdam to Barcelona (chosen as they are the HQ's of the two sections of MSF for whom he has worked). The Walk is a distance of around 2000 miles including a 400 mile section over the Alps and is expecting the journey to take around five and a half months.

Andy is a Staff Nurse on the Intensive Care Unit at Harrogate District Hospital. He is also a Field Nurse with Medecins Sans Frontieres. He has now worked on two operations with MSF. The first mission in 2005 was based in Displaced Persons camps in north of Uganda. The second in 2008 was involved in the setting up of health care clinics in the similarly volatile south of Sudan on the border with the Democratic Republic of Congo. The populations of both regions are terrrorised by a rebel group called the “Lords Resistance Army” who have maimed, tortured, displaced or killed millions over a 20+ year period.

MSF is a non political, non religious medical organisation working in around 60 countries. Andy was attracted to work for MSF because of their independence and by the fact that they are usually the first to provide care for those suffering through conflict, epidemic and natural disaster.

Andy is funding all aspects of the walk himself and ALL money donated here goes to MSF. If you wish to know more about MSF, his adventure and how you can help please see the website : www.walka2b.co.uk If you wish to contact him or have any ideas about publicity or fundraising (including Corporate sponsorship by ethically sound companies) please use: den0172@hotmail.com. He is very happy to attend meetings to give talks about MSF and the walk.

Sovibrant 2011 Mont Blanc Expedition

In July of 2011. Two members of Sovibrant's team will be taking on what's become known as the deadliest mountain in the world.  Adam Lay (3D Visualiser) and Michael Carter (Director)  as well as two other British mountaineers will be climbing to the roof of Europe to conquer Mont Blanc.

The "Snowy Mountain's" reputation is down to the unpredictable glacier movements throughout the year as well as constant rock falls. But the main attribute giving it the title of deadliest mountain is the 20,000 amateur mountaineers that flock to the peak every year to have their chance to stand on the highest point in western Europe.

Adam, Michael and the rest of the summit team, Bob Lay and Peter West will have 11 months of hard training to reach the peak of their physical fitness. Recapping on skills like technical ice and mixed terrain climbing expedition campinge high altitude crevasse rescue and many more.

For Adam and Michael this is all but a stepping stone. You may remember a few months back, Sovibrant's Adam Lay trekked to Everest  Base Camp for The Alzheimer's Society. That and Mont Blanc are just a few obstacles in between Adam and Michael  one day Stepping foot on the heighest peak in the world, EVEREST.

Stay tuned for more information over the next year on Mike and Adams progress.

Artist of the Week # 22 Yannik Dusso

Yannik Dusso is a matte painter from LA who's claim to fame was creating the digital backdrops on three of the newest Star Wars films.  Each matte painting that appears on these films will be placed on different layers giving the impression of 3D depth. The incredible thing is that one of these photorealistic paintings could take as long as 4 months to complete. But rather than go on about how awesome these paintings are we will let you judge for yourself.

Priestman Goode's new UK train concept

Design House Priestman Goode have unveiled their concept for the UK’s new high speed train in a pre-emptive move to persuade the government of the urgent need to move forward as soon as possible with the project.
Paul Priestman believes that the new high speed train is vital for the future of Britain, both as the low-carbon, sustainable transport of the future and as a crucial opportunity to champion British design and engineering in an increasingly competitive global economy.

For more images/video, plus other transport projects, check out http://www.priestmangoode.com/transport/

Iluma - Architectural Entertainment

Iluma is an entertainment and retail development in Singapore, cleverly located in the new designated arts, education and entertainment district of Bugis Street.

The building works by becoming a piece of entertainment itself, bringing a range of interest externally and internally. Externally, the building works with vibrant colours on one rectilinear section (which have been carefully selected to work with the surrounding neighbourhood colours) and then by introducing soft curves, lighter colours and a delicate touch of jewel like reflectors which are actually energy saving light bulbs! The design of “crystal façade” is a three-dimensional canvas on which media artists, art students and even the public can apply readable images, text and graphics and architectural treatments all on a scale of one city block.
The long term vision for this building is to eventually build a sense of ownership by the creative community around it, supporting events and activities in development, and make Iluma more than just retail space.
