Artist of the Week #15 Linda Bergkvist

A Swedish fantasy illustrator, Linda Bergkvist is known to most people as Enayla. Where as most pictures say a thousand words, Enayla's digital master pieces of these unnatural worlds could tell you an entire story. In each piece, there is a huge amount of mood and depth, pulling you in to these dark mystical story's.

It's no wonder Enayla has won a number of awards for her digital art work as well as appearing in numerous art magazines. One of the great things about her is that she has no problem in giving back to the digital art community by lecturing students in her techniques at the HUMLab.

Aquila Bank, Bilbao

In this day and age, Banks aren’t the places we want to spend time in however this unique design in Bilbao would encourage more of us to visit our local branch.

“Openness and transparency” was the motivation behind this interior design scheme which has been successfully achieved with over 300 bespoke glass tubes. Rather than coming up with an idea of an open office landscape like we see in traditional Banks, an entirely new solution was created that combines light and simplicity, as well as creating privacy for its customers. The tubes of glass transmit light in a slightly distorted manner and provide soundproofing, a private, yet open atmosphere that perfectly suits a banking space.

Artist of the Week #14 Robert Chang

Chang started his carrier at the age of 18 as a freelance illustrator for a Japanese fantasy publicist in Taiwan.
It didn't take him long to make an impression in the fantasy industry with the ability to paint to a photorealistic standard.

In 1998 he put down his pen and paper and joined to modernisation of digital art, were he was one of the few artists able to transfer his traditional methods in to full digital paintings. Throughout the years, Chang made his way up the digital arts industry in to games finally landing a job in art directing. But now, Chang works for himself and spends his time working on his own film "PROMISE", which he hopes to finish soon.

Vitra's Chairless

Vitra have come up with a revolutionary type of 'chair' that's causing a great deal of debate.

They say..... 'Chairless is a seating device for the modern nomad. This sturdy strap of fabric allows its user to sit down in a relaxed manner – but with neither seat nor backrest. It is thus a solution par excellence for times when chairs are in short supply: lunch in the park, while waiting in a crowded airport, a picnic on the lawn, sitting down at a concert, reading on the beach and on countless other occasions. Chairless is so light and compact that you can carry it with you wherever you go. Chairless relieves the spine and legs, so that hugging your knees or using a support is no longer necessary. Now your hands are free to operate your laptop or your iPod, for reading, eating etc'

We say....'Bonkers. You're going to get a wet/cold/uncomfortable bottom'.

A Jewellery Casket.

After my blog last week on the Chinese store for Romanticism, I’ve taken more of an interest into Interior Spaces which appear to form “new skin”. My second discovery comes from this spectacular Jewellery store in Tashkent (Republic of Uzbekistan).

The interior space appears to have become a giant ornate jewellery box to showcase its products. The dark walls are completely overlaid with laser-cut decorative ornamentation, made from highly polished stainless steel panels. The effect created is that of a second skin that develops unexpected depths of light. The length of the room is optically elongated by means of ornamental, tinted mirrors on the end walls with a dynamic lighting element crossing the ceiling. Only a few selected openings such as windows and display cases break the boundaries of “the shimmering casket”. Precisely illuminated jewellery display cases, in part equipped with monitors, offer the ideal stage on which to present precious collections of jewels.

3D Tabletop interactive display !

Hi everyone,

While browsing the web as us geeky visualisers usually do, I came across this funky little device. Instead of using the usual 2-field stereoscopic technology, this uses a new system called "Motion Parallax" which monitors the users view and adapts the 3D display accordingly..

Please check out the link below to CGArchitect.com for the full low-down and a small video demonstration.

Artist of the week #13. Neville Page

The lead character and creature artists from the number one film of 2010, Avatar.
Neville is one of the most talented sketch artist's in the film industry. Specialising in traditional pencil sketching and painting, he creates the most original creature designs and shows them in awesome realism.

Neville got his big break on Americas General Hospital however; acting wasn’t the artistic road he was looking for. Neville wanted to use his skills to take a role in film production. After spending a considerable amount of time on his portfolio he landed a position working as a design consultant alongside Scott Robertson – a position I doubt he ever expected to be in!

Retreat into your Shell

I've seen various Architectural projects designed around nature, with a tree as the central focus.

This project in Kitasaku, Nagano, Japan, however has to be the most sculptural and elegant example.

The holiday villa shown below is a large shell like structure situated in the middle of a wood.

On first impressions the building looks like an alien spacecraft gently resting on the forest floor.

When you take a closer look, the structure is firm rooted to the ground.
Built around a big fir tree, the villa is designed to become a part of nature, but with a permanence of a large rock or cave.

It's curved concrete structure protects its visitors from the regions' low temperatures and high humidity levels.

The advanced mechanical system provides a comfortable environment with beautiful interiors and picturesque views that never become dull.

"A design that no-one could copy”

Romanticism is a Chinese ladies clothes brand that holds 500 boutiques.
In order for this store (Hangzhou, China) to stand out, the cleverly constructed net feature is what makes this not only about the unique brand but all about the brand experience. The design started as an exploration between brand, clothing and the human body which lead further to thinking about the skin and skeletal form within a space. The whole design is exclusively white with the net changing its shape into partitions, a counter, a chair as well as a railing for clothes displays. This being the final result of looking at how the body’s skeleton moves and works.

Stairway to Heaven

Victor Horta's Art Noveau staircase in the Hotel Tassel (Brussels 1893) is the perfect example of a design fully integrating all components and finishes in perfect harmony. The curving forms of the stair's structure continue through the balustrades, flooring, lighting and wall decorations to create a total masterpiece:

Happy Birthday SoVibrant!!

Today at SoVibrant we are delighted to be celebrating our first birthday!!

We have had an exciting and successful first year and have really bucked the trend of the recession, increasing our staff by 50% and winning projects all over the UK  for a huge range of clients across a huge variety of sectors.

It has been brilliant for us, in our first year,  to be able to give jobs to people when many businesses are losing workforce and we very are proud of our tight-knit and highly talented design team.

With exciting and high profile jobs completing in the next few months such as the new Visitor Centre for the City of York and many other exciting jobs on the boards, the future definitely looks bright.

Thank you to everyone out there who has supported us in year one. You know who you are!  We have big plans for year two including overseas development, new faces, a new website, new business units and we are looking forward to continuing to blaze our trail through the interiors industry and beyond.
